How to Tell If Your Driveway Pavers Need Sealing
Your driveway pavers go through a lot. Sun, rain, foot traffic, vehicle weight, Florida’s humidity - it all adds up. But how do you know when it is time to call a professional for sealing? Here are the clearest signs to look for.
The Water Test
This is the easiest test you can do at home. Pour a small amount of water on your pavers. If the water beads up on the surface, your seal is still working. If the water soaks in immediately and darkens the paver, your sealant has worn off and your pavers are fully exposed.
This simple test takes 30 seconds and tells you everything you need to know.
Faded or Washed-Out Color
Brand new pavers have rich, vibrant color. Over time, UV exposure bleaches and fades that color, leaving your driveway looking dull and aged. If your pavers look significantly lighter or more washed out than they used to, that is UV damage taking its toll.
A fresh seal brings back the depth and richness of the color - especially with a wet-look sealant that makes pavers look like they were just installed.
Sand Washing Out of the Joints
After a good rainstorm, take a look at your paver joints. If you see sand washing out or the joints look shallow and empty, that is a problem. Joint sand holds your pavers in place and prevents shifting. When it washes away, pavers can begin to move, crack, or create tripping hazards.
A professional paver job includes re-sanding the joints before sealing to lock everything back in place.
Weeds and Grass Growing Between Pavers
If plants are pushing through your paver joints, your joint sand is gone and your pavers have no protection. Weeds are not just an eyesore - their root systems can actually lift and displace your pavers over time, causing real structural damage.
Green, Black, or White Staining
Algae turns pavers green. Mold and mildew create dark black staining. Efflorescence - a natural mineral deposit - leaves white chalky stains on the surface. All of these are signs that moisture is getting into your pavers unchecked.
These stains are treatable and removable with a proper cleaning before sealing. But the longer you wait, the harder they are to remove.
Pavers That Move or Wobble
If individual pavers shift when you walk on them, the base has been compromised - often by water infiltration or sand washout. This is a safety issue that needs to be addressed immediately. A proper cleaning, re-sanding, and sealing can stabilize the surface before replacement becomes necessary.
Do Not Wait Until It Is Too Late
Most of these signs get worse the longer you ignore them. What starts as minor fading or sand loss can turn into cracked pavers, uneven surfaces, and thousands of dollars in repairs or replacement.
